Gaius

/GAY-us/

Summary

A common Roman name borne by several Christians mentioned in the New Testament, including companions of Paul and the recipient of John's third epistle.

Gaius of Macedonia

A Macedonian Christian and fellow-traveler of Paul who was seized along with Aristarchus by the mob during the riot at Ephesus incited by Demetrius the silversmith. The crowd dragged them into the theatre during the tumult over Paul's preaching against idolatry.

Key verses:Acts 19:29

Gaius of Derbe

A man of Derbe who accompanied Paul on his last journey to Jerusalem, being among those who traveled with the apostle from Greece as far as Asia. Some scholars consider him possibly the same as the Macedonian Gaius, though the text distinguishes them by their cities of origin.

Key verses:Acts 20:4

Gaius of Corinth

An inhabitant of Corinth whom Paul baptized personally, a fact the apostle mentions when emphasizing that he baptized very few at Corinth. Paul calls him 'mine host and of the whole church,' indicating he was a man of means who provided hospitality for the apostle and a meeting place for the Christian assembly. He is likely the same person in both Pauline references.

Key verses:Romans 16:231 Corinthians 1:14

Gaius of Third John

A Christian addressed in John's third epistle, commended for walking in the truth and showing hospitality to traveling brethren and strangers. The apostle expresses joy that this Gaius's children walk in the truth and encourages his continued faithfulness. Whether he is identical with any of the preceding is uncertain, though some identify him with Gaius of Corinth.
