Summary

Theatres in the Greco-Roman world were large open-air structures for dramatic performances and public assemblies, mentioned in connection with the riot at Ephesus.

The Ephesian Theatre

During Paul's ministry in Ephesus, silversmiths whose trade in shrines of Artemis was threatened stirred up a riot. The confused crowd rushed into the theatre, dragging Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul's companions. Paul wanted to enter but was restrained. The city clerk eventually quieted the assembly, warning that such disorder could bring Roman intervention. The Ephesian theatre could seat about 25,000 people.
