Amminadab(aminadab, amminadib)

עַמִּינָדָב/am-IN-uh-dab/

My people is generous, or kinsman of the prince

Summary

An ancestor of King David and Jesus Christ, whose daughter married Aaron the high priest, linking the royal and priestly lines of Israel.

Ancestor of David and Christ

Amminadab was the son of Ram and father of Nahshon, who was the chief of the tribe of Judah at the time of the Exodus. He was the fourth in descent from Judah, the sixth in ascent from David, and appears in the genealogies of Jesus Christ in both Matthew and Luke. His lineage thus places him in the direct royal line leading to the Messiah.

Connection to the Priestly Line

Amminadab's daughter Elisheba married Aaron, becoming the mother of Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. This marriage represents the earliest recorded alliance between the kingly line of Judah and the priestly line of Aaron, foreshadowing the union of kingship and priesthood in Christ.

Other Individuals

Two other men bore this name: a son of Kohath who appears to be the same as Izhar in other genealogies, and a leader among the sons of Uzziel who helped bring the ark to Jerusalem under David's direction.
