Elisheba

אֱלִישֶׁבַע/ee-LISH-eh-buh/

God is her oath, or she swears by God (worshipper of God)

Summary

The wife of Aaron and mother of the Levitical priesthood, a daughter of Amminadab of the tribe of Judah whose marriage united the priestly and royal tribes.

Wife of Aaron

Elisheba was the daughter of Amminadab, the prince of Judah, and sister of Nahshon, captain of the host of Judah. She married Aaron, and by this union became the mother of the entire Levitical priesthood. Her four sons—Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar—all served as priests. After Nadab and Abihu died for offering unauthorized fire, the priestly succession continued through Eleazar and Ithamar. Her marriage united the royal tribe of Judah with the priestly tribe of Levi, a connection that foreshadowed the ultimate union of kingship and priesthood in the Messiah.
