Nahshon

נַחְשׁוֹן/NAH-shon/

Enchanter or diviner

Summary

Nahshon was the prince of the tribe of Judah during the wilderness wanderings, brother-in-law of Aaron, and an ancestor of King David and Jesus Christ.

Position and Rank

Nahshon was the son of Amminadab and prince of the children of Judah at the time of the first census in the wilderness. His sister Elisheba was the wife of Aaron the high priest, making Nahshon Aaron's brother-in-law. He was one of the twelve princes who assisted Moses and Aaron in taking the census, all of whom were 'renowned of the congregation, heads of thousands in Israel.' In the encampment, in the offerings of the princes, and in the order of march, the first place was assigned to Nahshon as captain of the host of Judah.

In the Lineage of Christ

Nahshon appears in the genealogies of both Matthew and Luke as an ancestor of Jesus Christ through the line of David. His son Salmon married Rahab after the conquest of Jericho, and their son Boaz married Ruth the Moabitess. From Boaz came Obed, Jesse, and David, establishing Nahshon as an important link in the royal and messianic lineage.
