Jewels
Summary
Precious ornaments of gold, silver, and gemstones used for personal adornment, betrothal gifts, religious offerings, and as symbols of value throughout Scripture.
☩Uses in Scripture
Jewels served multiple purposes in biblical times: as betrothal presents (Genesis 24:53), borrowed from Egyptians by Israelites at the Exodus (Exodus 3:22; 11:2; 12:35), dedicated to the tabernacle (Exodus 35:22; Numbers 31:50-52), and as tokens of love (Song of Solomon 1:10-11). Jacob regarded certain jewelry as obnoxious to holiness (Genesis 35:4), and Isaiah condemned the elaborate jewelry of the daughters of Zion (Isaiah 3:18-21).
☩Spiritual Symbolism
Jewels symbolize the value God places on His people, who are described as His 'special treasure' or 'jewels' (Malachi 3:17). The high priest's breastplate contained twelve precious stones representing the twelve tribes of Israel (Exodus 28:17-21). In Revelation, the New Jerusalem is described as adorned with precious stones, representing divine beauty and glory (Revelation 21:19-21).
