Offerings(heave offering, oblation, thank offerings, free will offerings)
Summary
The Levitical system included various offerings that taught Israel about sin, atonement, thanksgiving, and communion with God, all pointing forward to Christ's perfect sacrifice.
☩Types of Offerings
The Levitical system prescribed five main types of offerings. The burnt offering was entirely consumed on the altar, symbolizing complete consecration to God. The grain offering accompanied other sacrifices, representing the fruits of labor dedicated to God. The peace offering celebrated fellowship with God and was partially eaten by the worshipper. The sin offering provided atonement for unintentional sins, with the blood applied to the altar. The guilt offering addressed specific trespasses requiring restitution plus a penalty.
☩Fulfillment in Christ
The New Testament reveals that all these offerings found their fulfillment in Christ. He offered Himself as the perfect burnt offering, completely devoted to the Father's will. As sin offering, He became sin for us though He knew no sin. His blood brings true atonement that animal blood could only symbolize. The writer of Hebrews emphasizes that Christ's single sacrifice perfected forever those being sanctified, making the repeated offerings obsolete. Believers now offer spiritual sacrifices of praise, good works, and their very lives through Christ.
