Summary

Places of instruction in Israel, from prophetic schools at Naioth and elsewhere to home education commanded by God, culminating in rabbinic academies of the New Testament era.

Schools of the Prophets

Prophetic schools existed at several locations: Naioth near Ramah where Samuel presided, Bethel, Jericho, and Gilgal. These were communities of prophets living and learning together, sometimes in crowded conditions requiring expansion of facilities. Elijah and Elisha were associated with these schools, which trained young prophets in the knowledge of God's law and ways.

Home Instruction

God commanded parents to be the primary educators: 'Thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house.' This domestic instruction was to be continuous—upon rising, walking, lying down—with the words of the law upon doorposts and bound upon the hand. Every seven years at the Feast of Tabernacles, all Israel gathered to hear the law read publicly.

New Testament Schools

The Greek word 'schole' (from which 'school' derives) means literally 'leisure'—time set apart for learning. Paul reasoned daily in the school of Tyrannus at Ephesus. Gamaliel's school trained Pharisees including Paul himself. The law was described as a 'schoolmaster' (pedagogue) to bring us to Christ.
