Meshezabeel

מְשֵׁיזַבְאֵל/meh-SHEZ-uh-beel/

Whose deliverer is God

Summary

Meshezabeel was a name borne by several men in post-exilic Judah, including an ancestor of Meshullam who helped repair Jerusalem's wall and one who sealed the sacred covenant.

Identity

The name Meshezabeel means 'whose deliverer is God.' It is borne by at least two or three individuals in Nehemiah's time. One was the father of Berechiah and grandfather of Meshullam, who helped rebuild Jerusalem's walls around 446 BC. Another sealed the covenant that bound the people to observe God's law. A third (possibly the same person) was the father of Pethahiah, a descendant of Zerah of Judah, who assisted in civil administration under the Persian king.
