Deliverer

/dih-LIV-er-er/

Summary

One who rescues or saves from bondage, danger, or evil—a title applied preeminently to God and to the judges and leaders He raised up to save Israel.

God as Deliverer

Scripture repeatedly celebrates God as Israel's Deliverer, who brought them out of Egyptian bondage and rescued them from every enemy. 'The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer' is David's grateful testimony. This deliverance extends beyond physical salvation to rescue from sin and death.

Human Deliverers

God raised up judges as deliverers when Israel cried to Him under oppression: Othniel, Ehud, Gideon, and others. These human deliverers point forward to the ultimate Deliverer, Jesus Christ, who saves His people from their sins and from the power of the enemy.
