Meshullam

מְשֻׁלָּם

Friend, Devoted One

Summary

A common Hebrew name borne by numerous individuals in Scripture, particularly during and after the exile.

Prominent Bearers

Among the notable individuals named Meshullam: a grandfather of Shaphan the scribe during Josiah's reign (2 Kings 22:3); a son of Zerubbabel (1 Chronicles 3:19); a chief Gadite (1 Chronicles 5:13); and several priests and Levites in Ezra and Nehemiah's time (Ezra 8:16; 10:15, 29; Nehemiah 3:4, 6, 30; 6:18; 10:7, 20; 11:7, 11; 12:13, 16, 25, 33).

Builder of Jerusalem's Wall

One Meshullam, son of Berechiah, repaired part of Jerusalem's wall under Nehemiah (Nehemiah 3:4, 30). His daughter married Johanan son of Tobiah the Ammonite (Nehemiah 6:18), creating complications since Tobiah was an opponent of the rebuilding project. This marriage alliance may have compromised Meshullam's loyalty.

Name Significance

The name Meshullam derives from the Hebrew root shalam, meaning 'to be complete' or 'to be at peace.' It suggests one who is devoted, allied, or a friend. Its frequency in post-exilic times may reflect parents' hopes for their children in the difficult period of restoration.
