Eliphelet(eliphalet)

אֱלִיפֶלֶט/ee-LIF-eh-let/

God is his deliverance

Summary

A name meaning 'God is his deliverance,' borne by several men including two sons of David, one of David's mighty warriors, and others in later periods.

Sons of David

Two sons of David born at Jerusalem are named Eliphelet in the Chronicles genealogies. One appears as the third of David's Jerusalem-born sons exclusive of those by Bathsheba, and another as the ninth. Some scholars believe these represent a scribal duplication of a single name, though the Chronicles lists consistently include both and total the number of sons. The parallel passage in 2 Samuel 5:16 mentions only one son of this name.

Other Bearers

One Eliphelet was among David's distinguished warriors, 'the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maachathite,' though the parallel passage in Chronicles appears to give his name as Eliphal. A descendant of King Saul through Jonathan named Eliphelet was one of the three sons of Eshek. One Eliphelet was a leader of the Bene-Adonikam who returned from Babylon with Ezra. Another of the Bene-Hashum had married a foreign wife in Ezra's time.
