Oppression

Summary

Oppression in Scripture refers to the cruel treatment of the weak by the powerful, a sin that God consistently condemns and promises to judge.

Divine Concern for the Oppressed

Throughout Scripture, God reveals His special concern for those who are oppressed. He heard the cry of the Israelites under Egyptian bondage and delivered them. The Psalms repeatedly affirm that the Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, executing justice on their behalf. The prophets thundered against those who oppressed the poor, the widow, and the orphan, declaring that such treatment violated God's covenant requirements. Oppression by the rich and powerful was one of the primary charges against Israel and Judah before their exile.

Forms of Oppression

Biblical oppression took many forms: unjust labor practices, withholding wages, unfair lending, perversion of justice in the courts, excessive taxation, and physical violence against the vulnerable. The wealthy who "grind the faces of the poor" and those who deprive workers of their wages are especially condemned. Religious leaders who used their position to exploit the people rather than shepherd them came under particular judgment.

Call to Justice

True religion, according to Scripture, involves defending the oppressed. Isaiah calls Israel to "learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause." Jesus proclaimed liberty to the oppressed as part of His messianic mission. Believers are called to follow Christ's example by standing against injustice and caring for the vulnerable, reflecting God's own heart for the downtrodden.
