Malchiah

מַלְכִּיָּה/mal-KY-uh/

King of Jehovah or Jehovah is king

Summary

Malchiah was the name of at least ten different individuals near the time of the Babylonian exile, including Levites, priests, and laymen who participated in rebuilding Jerusalem's walls.

Priests and Levites

One Malchiah was a Levite descended from Gershom. Another headed the fifth division of priests appointed by David. Malchiah the father of Pashur was a priest whose son inquired of Jeremiah regarding Jerusalem's fate during Nebuchadnezzar's siege. This same Malchiah may have been the 'son of Hammelech' (meaning 'the king's son,' likely an official title) who owned the dungeon into which Jeremiah was thrown.

Another Malchiah, a goldsmith's son, repaired part of the wall opposite Ophel. Multiple individuals by this name had previously divorced their foreign wives in response to Ezra's reform.
