Ophel
“Swelling, hill, fortified hill”
Summary
The Ophel was a fortified hill or ridge in Jerusalem, located south of the temple area, which served as a stronghold and was fortified by several kings.
☩Location
The Ophel (meaning 'swelling' or 'hill') was a prominent ridge south of the temple mount in Jerusalem, extending toward the ancient City of David. This strategic location was naturally defensible and was strengthened with walls and towers by successive rulers. The Ophel was distinct from the temple mount itself but closely connected to it, serving as part of the fortified complex protecting the city's sacred and administrative center.
☩Fortification
Several kings fortified the Ophel. Jotham did extensive building there, constructing the upper gate of the temple and building extensively on the wall of Ophel. His grandson Manasseh, after his repentance and return from captivity, built a wall outside the City of David on the west side of Gihon, reaching to the Ophel. After the exile, the Nethinim (temple servants) lived on the Ophel and helped repair its walls under Nehemiah's leadership.
