Summary

The Greek form of Judah, borne by several New Testament figures including Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus, a brother of Jesus, and other apostles and disciples.

Judas Iscariot

Judas Iscariot was one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus (Matthew 10:4; Mark 3:19; Luke 6:16). He served as treasurer for the disciples but was dishonest, helping himself to what was put into the money bag (John 12:6; 13:29). His greed led him to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16). After identifying Jesus with a kiss in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:47-50), Judas was filled with remorse, returned the money to the chief priests, and hanged himself (Matthew 27:3-5; Acts 1:18). His betrayal was foretold in the Old Testament (Psalm 41:9; 109:8; Zechariah 11:12-13) and by Jesus Himself (John 13:18-26).
