Young men

/YUHNG MEN/

Summary

A distinct class within biblical communities characterized by physical strength and vitality, addressed with specific exhortations to pursue wisdom, resist temptation, and submit to elder guidance.

Wisdom Literature's Address

The book of Proverbs is largely structured as a father's instruction to his son, representing wisdom's appeal to young men. Extensive warnings address the temptations particularly facing youth: the seductions of the immoral woman, the enticements of sinful companions, the dangers of strong drink, and the folly of rejecting parental counsel. The young man is exhorted to pursue wisdom early, storing up instruction and understanding before the evil days come.

New Testament Instruction

The apostle John directly addresses young men as those who have 'overcome the evil one' and in whom God's word abides strongly. Paul instructs Timothy not to let anyone despise his youth, and counsels Titus to urge young men to be self-controlled. The emphasis falls on fleeing youthful lusts while pursuing righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

Young Men in the Early Church

Several Greek terms describe young men with little difference in meaning: neanias, neaniskos, and neoteros. A marked distinction between old and young characterized early Christian communities, reflecting Eastern custom and the practices of ascetic communities in Palestine. Age was regarded as a title to honor and one of the qualifications for office, with submission and reverence being the duty of the young. Whether 'young men' (neoteroi) held any formal church office remains debated; most likely they were simply distinguished as a class in the community rather than holding official positions.

The Rich Young Man

The encounter between Jesus and the rich young ruler stands as a sobering example of youth's struggle between worldly attachment and spiritual commitment. Though he had kept the commandments from his youth and genuinely sought eternal life, his great possessions proved an obstacle he was unwilling to surrender. Jesus looked upon him with love, yet the young man went away sorrowful.
