/MAS-ter WURK-man/

Summary

A master workman or artificer was a skilled craftsman, particularly those divinely gifted for constructing the tabernacle and temple, with the term also applied figuratively to divine Wisdom in creation.

Biblical Craftsmen

The earliest artificer mentioned is Tubal-cain, who forged instruments of bronze and iron. Bezalel, filled with the Spirit of God, was the master craftsman for the tabernacle, skilled in working gold, silver, bronze, and precious stones. Hiram of Tyre was the master worker in bronze for Solomon's temple, crafting the two great pillars, the molten sea, and numerous temple furnishings.

Wisdom as Master Workman

In Proverbs, personified Wisdom declares she was 'beside' God 'as a master workman' during creation, suggesting Wisdom's role as God's craftsman in bringing forth the ordered universe. Paul uses similar language, calling himself a 'wise master builder' who laid the foundation of the Corinthian church, upon which others must build carefully.
