Old age(aged)

/OHLD-ayj/

Summary

Scripture portrays old age as both a divine blessing to be honored and a season of frailty, with the elderly deserving special respect, care, and the wisdom that comes with years.

Blessing of Long Life

Scripture often presents old age as a divine blessing. God promised Abraham that he would go to his fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age. Job's prosperity included living to see four generations and dying "old and full of days." The righteous are promised to flourish like palm trees and still bear fruit in old age. Long life is associated with the wisdom that comes from years of experience.

Honor for the Aged

The Scriptures honor old age and the wisdom that comes with years. The Mosaic law commanded respect for the elderly: "You shall rise before the gray head and honor the face of an old man." Proverbs declares that "the hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness." Younger people were to listen to the wisdom of their elders. Paul instructed Timothy not to rebuke an elder sharply but to appeal to him as a father. He gave Titus specific instructions for aged men and women in the church: older men should be sober, temperate, and sound in faith, love, and patience; older women should be reverent and train younger women in godly living. In Philemon 1:9, Paul uses the term πρεσβύτης (presbytēs), which some render "Paul the aged"; textual criticism suggests "ambassador" may be more fitting in that context.

God's Care in Old Age

God promises to care for His people into old age: "Even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you." The Psalmist prayed not to be cast off in old age or forsaken when strength fails. Proper care for aging parents reflected covenant faithfulness.

Realities of Aging

Scripture does not romanticize old age but honestly portrays its challenges. Ecclesiastes poetically describes the decline of faculties: failing eyesight, trembling hands, difficulty walking, sleeplessness, and fear of heights. Barzillai honestly told David that at eighty he could no longer enjoy food, drink, or music. Yet even in decline, the faithful found their hope in God, who would sustain them to the end.
