/AY-jed/

Summary

Elderly persons who are to be honored and respected according to Scripture, with specific instructions given for their treatment in the church.

Honor for the Elderly

Scripture commands respect for the aged. The Law instructed, 'Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man.' Job's friends waited to speak because he was younger. Elders were typically leaders because of their accumulated wisdom and experience. Paul instructed Timothy not to rebuke an elder sharply but to appeal to him as a father.

Instructions for Aged Believers

Paul gave Titus specific instructions for aged men and women in the church. Older men should be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, love, and patience. Older women should be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or enslaved to wine, but teachers of what is good, training younger women in godly living.
