Burning, inflamed sore

Summary

An inflamed, ulcerated sore that appears in connection with the Egyptian plagues, leprosy diagnosis, and Job's affliction.

The Sixth Plague

God sent boils upon the Egyptians as the sixth plague, affecting both man and beast. The magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils. This plague is referenced in Deuteronomy as 'the botch of Egypt' that would come upon Israel for disobedience.

Leprosy Diagnosis

The Law provided instructions for priests to examine boils to determine whether they were symptoms of leprosy. A boil that healed but left a white swelling or bright spot required careful examination.

Job's Affliction

Satan afflicted Job with painful boils from head to foot, causing him to scrape himself with a potsherd while sitting among the ashes. Hezekiah's potentially fatal illness was also described as a boil, treated with a lump of figs.
