Summary

One of the most common Hebrew names in the Old Testament, borne by approximately 25 different individuals, most notably a king of Judah also known as Uzziah.

King of Judah

The most prominent Azariah was the king of Judah more commonly known as Uzziah. He reigned 52 years and was generally a good king who sought God. He was afflicted with leprosy after presumptuously entering the temple to burn incense, a duty reserved for priests. He spent his remaining years in isolation while his son Jotham governed.

The Prophet

Another Azariah was a prophet, son of Oded, who met King Asa returning from victory and encouraged him to complete his religious reforms. He warned that Israel would be without the true God, teaching priest, and law, but promised blessing if they sought the Lord. This message inspired Asa's reforms.

Daniel's Companion

One of Daniel's three companions bore this name. When taken to Babylon, Azariah was renamed Abednego. He was among those thrown into the fiery furnace for refusing to worship Nebuchadnezzar's golden image, and was miraculously delivered.
