Weapon of War

Arrows were the principal projectile weapons of ancient warfare. They were carried in a quiver and shot from the bow. Archers formed important divisions in ancient armies, including those of Israel. Jonathan's arrows served as a secret signal to David about Saul's intentions. Joash was instructed by Elisha to shoot an arrow eastward as a symbol of victory over Syria.

Figurative Uses

Scripture uses arrows as powerful metaphors. God's arrows represent His judgments against the wicked. Poisoned arrows describe deadly slander. Children are compared to arrows in a warrior's hand. The wicked shoot their arrows, even bitter words, against the upright. Lightning is described as God's arrows. Job felt God's arrows within him during his afflictions.
