Secret

/SEE-krit/

Summary

Hidden things known only to God or concealed matters between individuals, with Scripture teaching both divine omniscience of human secrets and the duty to protect confidences.

God's Knowledge of Secrets

Scripture repeatedly affirms that God knows all secrets. 'The secret things belong to the Lord our God.' He sees what is done in darkness and understands the thoughts and intents of the heart. In the day of judgment, God will bring every secret thing into judgment, whether good or evil, and will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ.

Secret Devotion

Jesus taught that acts of devotion should often be done secretly to please God rather than to impress others. Charitable giving should be done so that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing, and prayer should be offered privately in one's inner room. God who sees what is done in secret will reward openly.

Keeping Confidences

Scripture teaches the duty of protecting others' secrets and confidences. One should not reveal another's secret, and if a brother has sinned, the matter should be addressed privately first rather than being broadcast. Daniel was given understanding of God's secret purposes to interpret Nebuchadnezzar's dream, demonstrating that God reveals His secrets to His prophets.
