Palm Tree

/PAHM TREE/

Summary

The palm tree (Phoenix dactylifera, the date palm) was one of the most valued and symbolic trees in the biblical world, representing beauty, righteousness, and victory.

Description and Uses

The date palm grows from 30 to 80 feet tall, with a straight trunk topped by a crown of feather-like fronds up to 12 feet long. The tree is extraordinarily useful—Arabs enumerate 360 uses for it. Its fruit (dates) provides food, its sap yields wine, its leaves make mats and baskets, its fibers produce rope, and its trunk serves as timber. A single tree may produce 100 pounds of dates annually and continue bearing for 200 years.

Biblical Locations

Many places in Scripture derive their names from the palm. Jericho was 'the city of palm trees.' Elim had seventy palm trees at its springs. Hazezon-tamar means 'the pruning of the palm.' Bethany means 'house of dates.' Phoenicia itself takes its name from the Greek word for palm. Tadmor (Palmyra) was the 'palm city' on the caravan route from Damascus to the Euphrates.

Architectural Decoration

Palm trees were extensively used as decorative motifs in Solomon's Temple. Carved palms adorned the walls, doors, and bases of the sanctuary, reflecting both the tree's beauty and its religious significance. Ezekiel's vision of the future temple similarly includes palm tree decorations on the posts and walls.

Symbol of Righteousness

The psalm declares 'The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree.' This symbolizes the believer's orderly upright aspect, perpetual verdure, and fruitfulness into old age. The palm's determined upward growth, even when loaded with weights, represents the saint's heavenly aspiration despite earthly burdens. Rough and encased in dry bark below but beautiful and fruitful above, the palm mirrors the Christian life—despised below but glorious above.

Symbol of Victory

Palm branches came to symbolize triumph and rejoicing. They were carried at the Feast of Tabernacles and at celebrations of victory. The multitude who welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem took palm branches and cried 'Hosanna,' hailing Him as King. In Revelation, the glorified multitude stands before the throne with palms in their hands, signifying their ultimate triumph over tribulation.
