Pruning

/PROO-ning/

Summary

Pruning is the agricultural practice of cutting back vines and trees to increase fruitfulness, used symbolically for divine discipline.

Agricultural Practice

Vines required careful pruning to produce good fruit. Unproductive branches were cut away, and even productive ones were trimmed back to increase yield. The pruning hook was a common tool, mentioned in prophetic visions of peace when swords would be beaten into pruning hooks.

Key verses:Leviticus 25:3-4Isaiah 2:4Isaiah 18:5Micah 4:3

Spiritual Application

Jesus declared Himself the true vine and His Father the vinedresser. Every branch that bears fruit is pruned to bear more fruit. Believers are already clean through Christ's word but continue to be pruned through discipline and testing. This painful process produces greater fruitfulness.

Key verses:John 15:1-2
