Madmannah

מַדְמַנָּה/mad-MAN-uh/

Dunghill

Summary

Madmannah was a town in the southern district of Judah, possibly the same place later known as Beth-marcaboth ('house of chariots').

Location

Madmannah was located in the Negeb (southern district) of Judah, mentioned alongside Hormah and Ziklag. Eusebius and Jerome called it Menois and located it not far from Gaza. The site has been tentatively identified with Umm Deimneh, about twelve miles north of Beersheba. Some scholars identify it with Beth-marcaboth, which may indicate it served as a station for chariots on the route from Egypt to Palestine.

Key verses:Joshua 15:31

Genealogical Reference

In the Chronicles genealogy, Madmannah appears as a son (or perhaps a town founded by) Shaaph, who was the son of Caleb by his concubine Maachah. This suggests the town was founded or settled by this branch of Caleb's family.
