Branch

/BRANCH/

Summary

A shoot or sprout from a tree, used symbolically as a messianic title for Christ and to describe believers' union with Him.

Messianic Title

The 'Branch' is a significant messianic title in the prophets. Isaiah describes Messiah as 'the Branch of the Lord' and 'a rod from the stem of Jesse.' Jeremiah and Zechariah prophesy of a 'righteous Branch' who will reign as king. The Hebrew 'tsemach' signifies a shoot sprouting from roots, picturing the Messiah emerging from David's seemingly dead royal line.

Believers as Branches

Jesus called Himself the true vine and His disciples 'branches,' teaching that fruitfulness comes only through abiding in Him. Branches that do not bear fruit are cut away; those that do are pruned to bear more.
