/ZIK-lag/

Summary

A city in southern Judah given by Achish king of Gath to David during his exile from Saul, which became David's base of operations.

David's Refuge

When David fled from Saul to Philistine territory, Achish king of Gath gave him the city of Ziklag to dwell in. From there David conducted raids against the Amalekites and other southern tribes, deceiving Achish into believing he was raiding Israelite territory. Ziklag remained under Judah's control from that time forward.
