Jogbehah

יָגְבְּהָה/jog-BEE-hah/

Lofty

Summary

A fortified city east of the Jordan in the territory of Gad, located along Gideon's route when pursuing the Midianites.

Location and History

Jogbehah was one of the fortified cities that the tribe of Gad built after Israel conquered the Transjordan region, mentioned alongside Jazer and Beth-nimrah. The name means 'lofty,' suggesting an elevated position. It lay on the route Gideon followed when pursuing the fleeing Midianite kings Zebah and Zalmunna, near the city of Nobah, beyond Penuel, in the direction of Karkor. The site is identified with modern el-Jubeihat, located about seven miles northwest of Amman, Jordan, midway between that city and es-Salt, at an elevation of approximately 3,468 feet above the Mediterranean Sea. Archaeological remains at the site date primarily from Roman times, though the location's strategic position on the edge of the desert accounts for its ancient importance.
