House of god

Summary

A designation for places of divine worship, from Jacob's Bethel ('house of God') to the tabernacle and temple, and ultimately applied to the church.

Old Testament Usage

Jacob named Bethel ('house of God') after his vision of the heavenly ladder (Genesis 28:17, 22). The tabernacle and temple became God's house (Judges 18:31; 1 Chronicles 9:11), where He made His presence known. These were places of sacrifice, prayer, and encounter with the divine.

New Testament Fulfillment

Jesus called the temple 'my Father's house' (John 2:16). Paul identifies the church as 'the house of God' and 'pillar and foundation of the truth' (1 Timothy 3:15). Believers themselves become God's temple through the indwelling Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19).
