Ground

אֲדָמָה/GROWND/

Soil, so called from its red color

Summary

The earth or soil, often used in Scripture with reference to agriculture and God's curse upon it after the fall.

Biblical Usage

The Hebrew 'adamah' (from which Adam's name derives) refers to the soil or ground, while 'erets' means the earth more broadly. After the fall, God cursed the ground for man's sake, requiring toil to bring forth food. The ground received Abel's blood and opened its mouth against Korah's rebellion.
