Raguel
רְעוּאֵל/RAG-yoo-el/
“Friend of God”
Summary
Raguel, also known as Reuel and Jethro, was the Midianite priest who became Moses's father-in-law.
☩Identity
Raguel is an alternate form of the name Reuel, meaning 'friend of God.' He was a prince-priest of Midian and the father of Zipporah, Moses's wife, and of Hobab. The same individual appears to be called Jethro in Exodus 3:1 and elsewhere. Some scholars suggest that one name was personal and the other an official title, with 'Jethro' meaning 'pre-eminent' and 'Raguel/Reuel' meaning 'friend of God.' Josephus held that Jethro was an epithet applied to Raguel.
