Phinehas

פִּינְחָס/FIN-ee-us/

Possibly 'mouth of brass' or of Egyptian origin

Summary

Phinehas was the grandson of Aaron who demonstrated zealous devotion to God by executing divine judgment at Baal-Peor, earning a covenant of perpetual priesthood.

Zeal at Baal-Peor

When Israelites began committing immorality with Moabite women and worshipping Baal of Peor, a plague broke out killing 24,000. While Israel wept at the tabernacle entrance, an Israelite brazenly brought a Midianite woman into the camp. Phinehas seized a spear and thrust it through both of them, stopping the plague. God declared that Phinehas 'turned back my wrath' through his jealousy for God's honor.
