Jeush

יְעוּשׁ/JEE-ush/

He protects or assembler

Summary

A Hebrew name meaning 'he protects' or 'assembler,' borne by five different individuals in the Old Testament, most notably Esau's son who became an Edomite chief.

Son of Esau

The most prominent Jeush was the eldest of three sons born to Esau by his wife Aholibamah, daughter of Anah the Hivite. He was born in Canaan but later became a sheik or chief among the Edomites in Mount Seir. His genealogy is recorded in Genesis 36:5, 14, 18 and 1 Chronicles 1:35, where he appears as the ancestor of an Edomite clan. Some scholars have connected this name with an Arabian lion-god Yagut, meaning 'helper,' attested in ancient Thamudic inscriptions.

Other Individuals

Four other men in Scripture bear this name. A Benjamite named Jeush was among the sons of Bilhan, grandson of Benjamin. A Levite named Jeush was one of four sons of Shimei in the Gershonite line; because he and his brother Beriah did not have many sons, they were counted together as one family unit in David's census of the Levites. Another Jeush was a son of King Rehoboam, apparently by his second wife Abihail. Finally, a man spelled 'Jehush' in some versions was a son of Eshek among the descendants of Saul.
