Jeshua

יֵשׁוּעַ/JESH-oo-uh/

Jehovah is salvation (same as Joshua and Jesus)

Summary

A variant form of Joshua, borne by several Old Testament figures including the high priest who returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel.

The High Priest

The most notable Jeshua was the son of Jozadak (Jehozadak), the high priest who returned from Babylonian exile with Zerubbabel around 536 BC. He led the restoration of altar worship and Temple service (Ezra 3:2-8). Jeshua and Zerubbabel began rebuilding the Temple but were opposed by adversaries (Ezra 4:1-3). The prophets Haggai and Zechariah encouraged them to resume the work (Ezra 5:1-2), and the Temple was completed in 516 BC (Ezra 6:15). In Zechariah's visions, Joshua the high priest is shown being accused by Satan but defended and clothed with clean garments (Zechariah 3:1-10).
