Ichabod(I chabod)

אִי כָבוֹד/IK-uh-bod/

No glory, or where is the glory?

Summary

The son of Phinehas born after the ark's capture, whose name means 'the glory has departed' from Israel.

Birth Circumstances

Ichabod was born to the wife of Phinehas (Eli's wicked son) under tragic circumstances. When news came that the Philistines had captured the ark and killed both Eli and Phinehas, Phinehas's pregnant wife went into labor and died in childbirth. With her dying breath she named the child Ichabod, lamenting that the glory had departed from Israel.

Key verses:1 Samuel 4:19-22

Meaning of the Name

The name Ichabod means 'no glory' or 'where is the glory?' It expressed the profound theological loss felt at the ark's capture. The dying mother focused not on her personal losses—husband and father-in-law—but on the national calamity: 'The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.' The name became a perpetual memorial of Israel's darkest hour.

Key verses:1 Samuel 4:21-22

Later Reference

Ichabod's brother Ahitub became the father of Ahijah, who served as priest in Saul's time. This later reference shows Ichabod survived and his family continued the priestly line despite the judgment that had fallen on Eli's house.
