Hammoleketh

הַמֹּלֶכֶת/ham-MOL-eh-keth/

The queen; she who reigns

Summary

Hammoleketh was a woman of the tribe of Manasseh, daughter of Machir and sister of Gilead, whose descendants included the family from which the judge Gideon came.

Family and Descendants

Hammoleketh is introduced in the genealogies of Manasseh as the daughter of Machir and sister of Gilead. She had three children, among whom was Abi-ezer, from whose family sprang the great judge Gideon. Her lineage is thus significant in Israelite history through her connection to one of the major deliverers of Israel.

The Name and Tradition

The name Hammoleketh means 'the queen,' being the Hebrew article 'ha-' prefixed to 'Moleketh.' Jewish tradition, as preserved by Kimchi, records that she 'used to reign over a portion of the land which belonged to Gilead,' and that for this reason her lineage has been preserved in Scripture. Whether this reflects historical rule or merely her prominence in her family is uncertain.
