Abi

אֲבִי/AY-bye/

My father, a shortened form of Abijah meaning 'Yahweh is my father'

Summary

The mother of King Hezekiah of Judah, also known by the longer form Abijah, who was the daughter of Zechariah and wife of King Ahaz.

Identity

Abi was the mother of Hezekiah, one of Judah's most righteous kings. Her name appears in the shortened form "Abi" in 2 Kings 18:2, while the parallel passage in 2 Chronicles 29:1 gives the fuller form "Abijah." The name is not a copyist's error but a genuine contracted form, as indicated by the spelling in the oldest translations. She was the daughter of Zechariah, possibly the witness mentioned by Isaiah, and was the wife of the wicked King Ahaz.
