Amram

עַמְרָם/AM-ram/

Kindred of the High, or exalted people

Summary

A Levite of the Kohathite family who married Jochebed and became the father of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

Father of Moses

Amram was the son of Kohath and grandson of Levi. He married Jochebed, described as "his father's sister," by whom he had three children: Aaron, Miriam, and Moses. Such a marriage to an aunt was permitted before the giving of the Law but was afterward forbidden. Amram lived 137 years and died in Egypt. His descendants formed one of the major divisions of the Levites, known as the Amramites, who were assigned duties related to the sanctuary.

A second Amram was among the "sons of Bani" who, after the return from Babylon, separated from his Gentile wife at Ezra's instruction. A third Amram appears in the genealogy of Esau's descendants as a son of Dishon; he is called Hemdan in the parallel passage.
