Summary
The Christian duty of generous liberality that flows naturally from the gospel message of God's gift in Christ.
☩Foundation in the Gospel
The duty of giving springs from the gospel fact that Jesus Christ is God's gift to the world. Receiving and giving are correlatives: 'freely ye received, freely give.' Throughout the Gospels, the welcome of Christ awakens generous impulses, as seen in Zacchaeus's new resolve.
Key verses:John 3:16Matthew 10:8Luke 19:8
☩Principles of Christian Giving
Believers are encouraged to give willingly, cheerfully, and proportionately to their ability. God loves a cheerful giver, and giving is to be done not grudgingly or of necessity but as an expression of gratitude for God's grace.
