Physician

Summary

Physicians in Scripture practiced healing arts, though ultimate healing was recognized as coming from God, the Great Physician.

Ancient Medical Practice

Physicians existed in ancient times, with Egypt particularly noted for medical knowledge. Joseph commanded physicians to embalm Jacob. Asa was criticized for seeking physicians rather than the Lord in his foot disease. The woman with an issue of blood had suffered much under many physicians, spending all she had without improvement. Luke, Paul's companion, was called 'the beloved physician.'

Jesus as Physician

Jesus identified His ministry with that of a physician: 'Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.' His healing miracles demonstrated power over physical disease, but His primary mission was spiritual healing from sin.
