Temple Shovels

The Hebrew 'ya' (from 'ya'ah,' to sweep away) designates the implements for removing ashes from the altar. These were made of bronze for the tabernacle and later for Solomon's temple. They were among the sacred vessels carried to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar.

Agricultural Shovels

The Hebrew 'rachath' (from 'ruach,' wind) refers to a wooden winnowing fork or shovel used on the threshing floor. Grain was tossed into the air with this shovel so the wind could separate chaff from wheat.
