Loaves

/LOHVZ/

Summary

Bread formed into loaves for baking; mentioned in miracles of multiplication and the shewbread of the Tabernacle.

Feeding the Multitudes

Jesus miraculously multiplied five barley loaves (and two fish) to feed 5,000 men besides women and children (Matthew 14:17-21; John 6:9-13). Later He fed 4,000 with seven loaves (Matthew 15:34-38). Jesus used these miracles to teach spiritual lessons, declaring 'I am the bread of life' (John 6:35). When the disciples worried about forgetting bread, Jesus reminded them of the abundant leftovers (Matthew 16:5-12).

Shewbread

Twelve loaves of shewbread ('bread of the Presence') were placed on a gold table in the Holy Place, renewed every Sabbath (Leviticus 24:5-9). The old loaves were eaten by the priests. When David's men were hungry, the priest gave them the holy bread, an incident Jesus cited to show that human need can supersede ceremonial regulations (1 Samuel 21:1-6; Matthew 12:3-4).
