A disciple (Greek 'mathetes,' learner) is one who believes a teacher's doctrine, rests upon his authority, and practices adherence to his teaching. The term applies to followers of John the Baptist, of the Pharisees, of Moses, and especially of Jesus—both the Twelve specifically and believers generally.

Companies of students gathered under prophets like Samuel, Elijah, and Elisha at places like Ramah, Bethel, Jericho, and Gilgal. These 'sons of the prophets' sometimes lived in poverty—one's widow appealed to Elisha for help with creditors. Daniel and his companions were students in the Babylonian state school.
