Definition

Sobriety is both the ornament and defense of a Christian—requisite in every situation and enterprise. It is self-possession and self-defense against turbulent passions. It is necessary when we read, hear, pray, converse, form schemes, pursue them, prosper, or fail.

Applications

Sobriety is necessary in inquiry after truth (opposed to presumption), pursuit of the world (opposed to covetousness), use of worldly things (opposed to excess), trials (opposed to impatience), judgment of others (opposed to censoriousness), and speaking of oneself (opposed to egotism). Women should exhibit sobriety in dress.

Who Requires It

Sobriety is required of God's servants, their wives, aged men, young men, young women—all saints. It must accompany watchfulness and prayer. The gospel teaches us to deny ungodliness and live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world.
