Self Will

/SELF-wil/

Summary

The sinful disposition of stubbornly following one's own desires and judgments rather than submitting to God's will and authority.

Nature of Self-Will

Self-will is the assertion of human autonomy against divine authority. It manifests in refusing to listen to God, rejecting His messengers, declining to walk in His ways, and hardening one's neck against correction. Its roots include unbelief, pride, and an evil heart that prefers its own counsel to God's wisdom.

Key verses:Nehemiah 9:16-17Jeremiah 7:24Acts 7:51

Biblical Warnings

Scripture consistently warns against self-will. God knows the obstinacy of human hearts and calls His people to humble submission rather than stiff-necked rebellion. The self-willed person refuses correction, rebels against God's authority, and walks in the counsel of their own evil heart rather than following divine guidance.

Key verses:2 Chronicles 30:8Psalm 75:5Isaiah 48:4

Manifestations

Self-will appears in many forms: refusing to listen to parents, resisting the Holy Spirit, rebelling against God's appointed authorities, and walking contrary to God's revealed will. Israel's history repeatedly illustrates the consequences of self-will—they would not hearken, hardened their necks, and did not believe in the Lord their God.
