Seasons
Summary
The regular divisions of the year established by God at creation, less marked in Palestine than northern countries but fundamental to agricultural and religious life.
☩Biblical Seasons
The four seasons in Palestine are not as marked as in northern countries, summer fading gradually into winter and vice versa. Scripture mentions only 'summer and winter'—no spring or autumn—reflecting the two primary seasons experienced there. God promised after the flood that 'seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter' would not cease while the earth remained.
☩Agricultural Cycle
Winter is the rainy season from November to May, when 'The winter is past; the rain is over.' The people suffer with cold as they have no heating in houses. Summer is very hot and rainless—the season for harvesting and threshing. 'He that gathereth in summer is a wise son' speaks to the importance of using this season well.
☩Divine Sovereignty
God controls the seasons: 'He appointed the moon for seasons.' The regularity of seasons demonstrates divine faithfulness—'my covenant of the day and my covenant of the night' that cannot be broken. Yet believers are reminded that 'the times and the seasons' are in the Father's authority alone.
