Longsuffering

/LONG-suf-er-ing/

Summary

Patience in enduring provocation or delay, an attribute of God and fruit of the Spirit in believers.

Divine Longsuffering

God revealed Himself to Moses as 'The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth' (Exodus 34:6). His longsuffering with sinners demonstrates His desire for repentance: 'The Lord is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish' (2 Peter 3:9). Paul marveled that Christ showed 'all longsuffering' toward him as 'chief of sinners' (1 Timothy 1:15-16).

Christian Longsuffering

Longsuffering is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) and characteristic believers are to 'put on' (Colossians 3:12). It involves patience with people's failings and endurance through trials. Paul's description of love begins with 'suffereth long' (1 Corinthians 13:4). Believers are to walk 'with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love' (Ephesians 4:2).
