Industry(work)

/IN-dus-tree/

Summary

Diligent labor and productive activity, commended throughout Scripture as God's design for human life.

Divine Mandate

Work is part of God's original design for humanity, not a result of the fall. God placed Adam in the garden to cultivate and keep it. The fourth commandment assumes six days of labor as normal. Industry reflects the creative activity of God Himself, who worked in creating the world.

Key verses:Genesis 2:15Exodus 20:9John 5:17

Proverbs' Teaching

Proverbs repeatedly commends diligent work and condemns laziness. The ant stores provisions without overseer; the virtuous woman works willingly with her hands; the diligent hand makes rich. Such industry brings stability, provision, and honor, while slothfulness leads to poverty and shame.

Key verses:Proverbs 6:6-8Proverbs 31:13-27Proverbs 10:4Proverbs 12:24

New Testament Examples

Paul worked as a tentmaker to support his ministry and set an example. He commanded that those unwilling to work should not eat. Labor is to be done heartily, as unto the Lord, transforming even menial tasks into worship. Industry serves both human need and divine glory.

Key verses:Acts 18:32 Thessalonians 3:10-12Colossians 3:23Ephesians 4:28
